There are plenty of things to see and do on a holiday on the beautiful island of Sardinia, however, we want to highlight a stunning town packed with character, that should be on your list!

Sitting on the north west coast of Sardinia, shrouded in ancient walls, lies the old town of Alghero sitting on the north west coast of Sardinia. A medieval town well known for its cobblestoned streets, it is a delight to explore by day or night. Admire the architecture of the churches, take in the Catalan influences and splendour at the Gothic cathedral, visit the market or sit and take in the stunning sea views out over the walls with a coffee or maybe an Aperol!

As you walk towards the town from the tourist port area, you will be able to look up at the town itself, sitting proudly behind the walls, as you head under an unassuming archway, you will find yourself within the walls themselves. The old buildings are stunning, make sure to take the time to admire them, as they are some of the best preserved in Sardinia. As you follow the tightly knit streets you will see an array of bars, restaurants and gelaterias – for gelato lovers ‘ReGelato’ is a must try, with a wonderful selection of flavours that are extremely moreish!

After your gelato stop, take a small stroll down to the Church of Saint Michael, a 17th-century church easily recognised by its colourful tiled dome. On the same street you will also find the Church of San Francesco, a beautiful sandstone building that blends in with its surroundings perfectly.

After you have had your fill of churches and winding streets, take a road that leads you to the front of the town, follow the ancient walls and towers as you take in the sea views. The sounds and smells of food coming from the small cafes and pizzerias will tempt you in no doubt, this is the perfect opportunity to take part in a long lunch, just how the Sardinians themselves like to do! As you continue along the walls you will spot the Trebuchet, another great place to stop and take in the view and history of this great town.

There are some wonderful places to stay near to Alghero, such as Hotel Punta Negra, this hotel provides you with the perfect base to explore, with a large carpark perfect for those getting around with their hire car. Punta Negra boasts a stunning seafront location that is hard to beat! Enjoy your breakfast listening to the sound of lapping waves and in the distance, you will see the old town of Alghero (less than a 10-minute drive away), this hotel is perfectly tranquil. There are two on-site restaurants, two fabulous pools to relax by and a quaint and quiet beach to while away the days that you aren’t out exploring.

If you are looking for a self-catering holiday, why not try Villa Monica, surrounded by stunning scenery and only a 10-minute drive from the town centre. Enjoy the villa’s extensive verdant grounds, covered in olive trees and even its own vineyard, see if you can spot a terrapin in the small pond!
