Blog > Scuba diving in La Maddalena Archipelago - a diver's paradise!

Whilst Sardinia may not be well known for its scuba diving, it should be! Find out more in our blog.

Set on the northeast coast of Sardinia within the beautiful Costa Smeralda area, is Palau, a small seaside town with magnificent views across to the archipelago of La Maddalena. This group of islands is home to two marine parks, making it the perfect place for divers, from beginners right through to those with technical dive experience!

La Maddalena, made up of almost 60 islands, is a haven of turquoise lagoons, deserted islands and gorgeous beaches! You wouldn’t know that you were just 5km away from the town of Palau, for its tranquillity is comparable to a remote island in the Caribbean.  There are regular ferries to transport you to the islands, where you can spend a day relaxing and exploring the rugged, yet breathtaking landscape by foot.

There is another option for water lovers who wish to explore the archipelago, scuba diving! Dotted all over the town of Palau are friendly dive shops all promising a magnificent day exploring the underwater world of La Maddalena, and they won’t disappoint! There are 40 dive sites around the archipelago, with varying degrees of difficulty, with something of all abilities to try. The waters between the main island and La Maddalena are shallow and well-lit and along with the currents, this makes for a perfect foundation for rich and diverse marine life. For those wishing to combine history and marine life, visit the dive site where you can see a World War two bomber engine sitting at just 22 meters! The variety of dive sites ensures that a morning (or even a full day) of diving will be rewarding for the whole family!

If you are not a diver or do not feel this is something for you, many dive shops will also offer snorkelling trips. The clear and warm waters will allow you to see much of the marine life divers may see, all whilst maintaining a safe distance near to the boat!

Why not plan your summer getaway to Sardinia today and explore the magnificent archipelago for yourself, there are plenty of wonderful properties to choose from:

Villa Asfodeli is a stunning property nestled on the hillside between Arzachena and Palau with truly glorious views of the surrounding countryside. Sleeping up to 4, you will feel at home in this villa, with a large private pool and open-plan living area. Dine outside and enjoy an evening drink beside the pool after a busy day of diving!

Hotel Capo d’Orso Thalasso and Spa is a delightful 5-star hotel in a prestigious location in the bay of Cala Capra. Only 4km from Palau this makes a perfect property to explore the dive sites on offer around the archipelago. Located on the waterfront you are connected to the sea, perfect for marine lovers. Enjoy views out to La Maddalena whilst you relax after a day of diving or sightseeing in the local area and enjoy first-rate meals at the on-site restaurants of an evening.
