With so much to see and do it is no surprise that people choose to see Sardinia on their own two feet and backpack across the island.

Backpacking in Sardinia is a rewarding way to see the island and the best time to do so is in the shoulder seasons from April to June and September to November. During these months the weather is mild and there are fewer tourists, allowing you to explore the island in peace. Many of the affordable accommodations will be booked during the peak months of July and August.

With three main airports in Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero as well as Calvi, there are plenty of ways to reach the island. If you are coming via ferry there are many to choose from plenty of destinations in Europe, see our blog here.

Backpackers can find a variety of accommodations in Sardinia, ranging from campsites to hostels and guesthouses. There are also plenty of residences and self-catering properties to choose from to ensure that you can keep your budget down.

Once you are settled into the island it is time to explore! There is so much to do, from walking, swimming, diving, snorkelling, boat trips and even visiting historical sites. Take a look at our holiday activities page here.

Tips for backpacking:

  • Be prepared for hot, sunny weather by bringing plenty of sun cream, a hat, and light clothing.
  • Respect the local culture and traditions, including dress codes at religious sites.
  • Be sure to carry plenty of water on hikes, as well as snacks and a first aid kit.
  • Rent a car or scooter to explore the island's more remote areas.
  • Practice responsible tourism by following regulations and leaving no trace.

Backpacking in Sardinia is a great way to experience the island's natural beauty, rich culture, and delicious cuisine. Whether you're looking for a relaxing beach vacation or an adventurous hike, Sardinia has something for every backpacker. So pack your bags, grab your hiking boots, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in this stunning island paradise.
