From the chic marinas of the Costa Smeralda to the small villages hidden away in the mountainous interior and the fascinating ancient archaeological sites scattered across the island; Sardinia's landscape boasts relics of an eventful history. Its strategic position in the Med has meant that a diverse assortment of inhabitants have left their mark over the years, which is depicted in particular through the island's timeline of architecture, from Roman ruins to Spanish Baroque churches and Pisan style towers.
The stunning scenery and warm-hearted culture that Sardinia is synonymous with is what attracts visitors today. Over the years, Sardinians have retained a strong sense of their own identity and age-old cultural customs are kept alive through local dialects, folklore, traditional costume and an abundance of festivals throughout the year, which are in turn at the heart of popular culture today.
The island itself is a colourful display, from the turquoise seas to dramatic granite cliffs and endless golden sands. Wildlife is abundant and bird lovers will be amazed at the variety of species to be seen on the island. During migration time in particular the wetlands here, of which there are 130 square kilometres of protected lagoons, are home to a variety of rare birdlife. The mountain and woodland areas are also home to wild sheep and goats and near Alghero, Lago di Baratez, Sardinia's only natural lake, species of fresh water tortoise can be found.
