Sardinia to Scrap Luxury Tax

26 March 2009

Sardinia’s new governor Ugo Cappellacci is to scap so called “luxury taxes” which were introduced in 2006 and apply to all yachts over 14 metres mooring on the island and all private aircraft touching down on Sardinia. The fees for yacht owners were as much as fifty times more than comparable charges in Greece, Corsica and Croatia.

Under the “luxury tax” system owners of yachts beween 14 metres and 16 metres in length must pay 1,000 euros for mooring at any of the island’s ports, even if just for a day. For yachts over 60 metres the charges rise to 15,000 euros.

Ugo Cappellacci announced his plans in a draft budget presented to trade unions on Tuesday.
