30 March 2009 - Sardinian Places - Press Office
Renowned for having a strong sense of tradition and passion for their island, Sardinians host a wealth of festivals throughout the year. Sardinian Places is keen to highlight Cavalcata Sarda, one of the biggest and most high profile events, which begins near the start of the season on 24 May.
The Cavalcata Sarda in Sassari, near Alghero (North West Sardinia), is a day long event which brings together people from all over the island and, originally a grand show laid on for visiting royalty, provides a brilliant demonstration of Sardinian culture and history. The town comes alive with colourful decorations, parades, horse shows, poetry competitions, chants and traditional dances, and the magnificent costumes and jewellery worn reflect the handicrafts of the island. Many of the professional riders who participate go on to demonstrate equestrian races and stunts at a racetrack on the edge of the town.
Sardinian Places product manager, Amandine Blanchard comments:
“The Cavalcata Sarda is one of the most important festivals of the year, providing an excellent opportunity for spectators to experience the heart and soul of the real Sardinia.”
